What is counselling?
Counselling is a supportive, confidential space where a trained professional can help someone to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a deeper way. It’s about working together to understand challenges, build coping strategies, and move toward healthier patterns and personal growth.
How long does counselling last?
Counselling can last for just a few sessions or continue over a longer period, depending on what you need. Some people come for short‑term support focused on a specific issue, while others prefer a more open‑ended approach to explore things in depth. The pace and duration are always shaped around what feels most helpful for you.
What if I don't know what to say?
It’s very common to sit down in counselling and not know what to say at first. Your counsellor will gently guide the conversation, so you’re never left struggling on your own. Silence is okay too — sometimes it helps you notice what you’re really feeling, and the session naturally finds its direction from there.
What happens in the first session?
A first counselling session is a relaxed conversation where you and the counsellor get to know each other. You’ll talk about what brought you there, what you hope to work on, and how the counsellor can support you. They’ll also explain confidentiality and their approach so you can decide if it feels like a good fit.

What happens if I get upset?
It’s completely normal to get emotional in counselling, and therapists are used to it. Your counsellor will stay calm, give you space, and support you through whatever feelings come up. You can pause, take a moment, or shift the conversation whenever you need to — you’re always in control.
Is counselling confidential?
Confidentiality in counselling means that what you share stays private between you and your counsellor. They only break that confidentiality in rare situations where someone is at serious risk of harm. Knowing this helps create a safe space where you can speak openly.
